Betty Joan Cox, 86, of West Liberty, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, January 28, 2011, at Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, IA. To honor her memory, a visitation will be held on Monday, January 31, 2011, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty, with funeral services being held on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at 10:00am at the Christian Church in Nichols. Burial will be at the Nichols Cemetery. Corrine Welsch will officiate. Pallbearers are Zach Bunker, Eric Daufeldt, Justin Niermeyer, Clay Keller, Joshua Cox, and Justin Cox. Honorary pallbearers are Jack Bunker, JR Bunker, Chris McCaw, John Amos, Chris Keller, Wayne Harvey, Paul Harvey, Andy Harvey, Mark Allison, and Dave Aragon. A memorial fund has been established. Betty was born on April 29, 1924, in Sigourney, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest and Gladys (Bales) Hill. She graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1942. She married Jesse Russell Cox on June 9, 1948 in Gainesville, Texas. He passed away July 11, 1978. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant most of her life, working at various hospitals and nursing facilities throughout the area. She was employed at Simpson Memorial Home for the last 26 years of her career. She was an Avon Representative for many years as well, earning many “Mrs. Albee” awards. She was an avid “Cubs” and “John Wayne” fan. Her family was a major force in her life and she loved them deeply. She will be missed very much by those who knew and loved her. Survivors include her children: Rose Schraceo, Galesburg, IL, Alice (Harley) Daufeldt, Tipton, IA, Larry (Josie) Harvey, Burkburnett, TX, Debra Merchant, North English, IA, Ron (Fay Cline) Cox, Atalissa, IA, and Barry (Rebecca) Cox, Columbus Junction, IA. Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Cathy Cox, West Liberty, IA and two brothers, Ernest (Jean) Hill of Davenport, IA, and Jack (Sue) Hill of Iowa City, IA, along with 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Cox, one son, Dennis Cox, one granddaughter, Jennifer Merchant, a brother and his wife, James and Fran Hill, and her parents. The family would like to thank her many doctors, along with the nurses and staff at Simpson Memorial Home for their 12 years of assistance in Betty’s care, as well as Iowa City Hospice during the last month of her life.
