Martha Jean Nichols, 95, died Monday, December 29, 2014 at Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Visitation will be held at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home on Thursday, January 1, 2015, from 2:00 -5:00 p.m. Services will be at the United Methodist Church in West Liberty, Friday, January 2 at 10:30. Interment will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. Memorials may be made to United Methodist Women, or the activities fund at Simpson Memorial Home/Heath Manor. Martha Jean was born January 23rd, 1919 in Cranston, Iowa the daughter of W. Ernest and Effie Shires Meeker. She was a graduate of Muscatine High School and Iowa State Teachers College, now UNI. She taught one year in Columbus Junction before accepting a job with the Muscatine Community School District where she taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grades for 41 years, all at Jefferson Elementary School.
On August 27th, 1950 she was united in marriage to Donald S. Nichols in Cranston Iowa. She and Donald resided southwest of West Liberty where they farmed.
She was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church, and an active member of UMW. Following retirement, she enjoyed baking, making decorated cakes and overseeing meal preparations at the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include her two children: Carolyn (Tom) Probst of West Liberty and Tim (Kris) Nichols of Nichols. Five grandchildren: Emily and Ben Probst and Merideth, Morgan and Jacob Nichols.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister Geraldine Schomberg and a brother Joseph Meeker.
