Jane Marie Buckman Husted, died Jan. 8, 2014, at Hospice House in Great Falls, Mont.
Graveside services will be held 4 P.M. Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. Memorials are suggested to go toward the Benefit Foundation Jane Buckman Husted Scholarship for Nurses.
Jane was born February 26, 1922, daughter of Ray and Elizabeth Buckman in West Liberty. She graduated from the School of Nursing at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City in 1943. After graduation, Jane enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant stationed in the U.S. and later at the 42nd Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, for eight months. After finishing her tour of duty, Jane was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant.
Jane worked as a surgical post-op nurse in Kansas, California and Arizona, before returning to Iowa where she finished her career as a geriatric nurse with the Veteran's Administration. In all, she served for thirty-five years in the nursing profession before her retirement.
After she retired, Jane relocated to Billings, Mont., and worked part-time in home health care. Jane also volunteered at St. Vincent Hospital, working over 2,000 hours.
Jane loved the nursing profession, as well as doing what she could to honor veterans. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 36 years and President of the Billings Auxiliary Unit 4 in 1984.
She is survived by her son Paul C. Husted of Great Falls; daughter-in-law Lori Husted, of Great Falls; sister Marjorie Johnson of Fargo, N. D.; grandchildren, Erin Husted, Anna Husted, and Jordan Husted; nephews, Max Johnson and Phil Johnson and cousin John Buckman
