West Liberty, Iowa Mary Jane Simpson Ruess, 95, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2020 at Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty. Private family graveside services will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2020. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the activities program at the Simpson Memorial Home. Jane was born August 14, 1925 in Nichols, Iowa to David and Charlotte Porter. She had 7 siblings, 2 of which are still living. She enjoyed playing on the girls basketball team with her sister Jean and was involved in theater during high school. After high school she worked as a telephone operator. Jane was united in marriage to Lloyd Simpson on September 27, 1948. They farmed and resided in the West Liberty area. She enjoyed raising her five children and spending time with her numerous grandchildren on their farm. Jane loved spending time outside with flowers and maintaining the home. Lloyd and Jane were members of St. Joseph Catholic church, where they attended with their family. After Lloyd passed in 1985, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Ruess. They spent time with friends dancing and traveling together to Hawaii. They were fortunate to share 30 happy years together. Jane will always be remembered by her family as a mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family. She will be deeply missed by her 5 children: Ron (Deb) Simpson, Lindsey (Deb) Simpson, Sheri Chelf, Julie (Scott) McKillip, and Marc (Lisa) Simpson. She also leaves behind 23 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both husbands. Jane’s family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Simpson Memorial Home for their devoted care these past three years. Especially during this pandemic, they were her family when family couldn’t be there.
