His father founded Iowa Memorial Company in West Liberty, which Bob became owner of in 1967. He served in the Navy on the S. S. Pawcatuck in the Mediterranean during the Korean War. After that he graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a B.S. in Business. On August 25, 1955 he was united in marriage to Marilyn Wiedle in Ferguson, Missouri.
