Iowa City, Iowa Gary D. Johnson, 72 of Iowa City, formerly of West Branch passed away on June 20, 2020 at his home in Iowa City. Private family inurnment will take place at the West Branch Cemetery. Gary was born on December 2, 1947 to Delbert and Forestine (Lucassen) Johnson in Springdale, IA. He graduated from West Branch High School in 1966 and received an associate of business degree. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves. Gary married Brenda Thomas in 1973. Gary farmed in Cedar County. He enjoyed working with his hands in the garden, refinishing old furniture, and occasionally going to the casino for a bit of fun. He was kind, friendly, compassionate and a positive person, who was known to help others in need. He established a close relationship with Builders of Hope, an Iowa City based organization that supports mental health and community living programs. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his daughter Jaime Izen, his sons: Cory and Brandon Johnson, his grandchildren: Mikayliah, McKinsey, Jakob and Brooklyn and his brothers: Terry Johnson, Lynn Johnson and Steve (Karole) Johnson.
