West Liberty, Iowa Joan Agnes Smithers, 85, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at Windmill Manor in Coralville. Visitation will be held Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 9:30 until 10:30 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty with funeral mass to follow at 10:30. Burial will be in the Preston Cemetery, Preston, Iowa. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is caring for Joan's family. Joan was born January 12, 1935 in Preston, Iowa the daughter of Jacob and Genevieve (Roling) Bormann. She was a graduate of Preston High School. On November 19, 1952 she was united in marriage to Leo Steines, he passed away in 1965. In November 1969 she was married to James H. Shields and they later divorced. On March 15, 1974 she and Jack Smithers were married in Clinton, Iowa, he passed away in 2014. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the West Liberty American Legion Auxiliary where she served as secretary/treasurer. Joan enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. She loved to crochet and shared many items with family and friends. Everyone looked forward to her trays of homemade cookies at Christmas. She is survived by his four children: Monica (Larry) Shields; Floyd (Renee) Steines; Agnes (Terry) Meeker; James (Allyson) Steines; 9 Grandchildren: Mark Shields, Brian (Jamie) Shields, Ryan Steines, Kevin (Heather) Steines, Teresa (Kyle) Keller, Ashley (David) Dyer, Coleman Steines, Claire Steines and Rachel (Oscar) Trinidad. Great Grandchildren: Eleanor, Madelyn and Carolyn Steines, Harrison and Leo Shields, Kayden and Kacedy Keller, and Samson Trinidad. Brothers and Sisters: Beatrice Gavin, Bonnie Bormann, Eugene (Janice) Bormann and Gladys Tebbe. She was preceded in death by daughter Angela Sager, parents, husbands, brother: Orville Bormann and brother in laws: Alfred Tebbe, Jr. and Jack Gavin. A special thank you to the staff at Windmill Manor for taking such good care of Joan.
