** THE CELEBRATION OF LIFE SCHEDULED FOR HARRY ON JUNE 7TH HAS BEEN POSTPONED AND WILL BE ANNOUNCED WHEN A DATE IS SCHEDULED. ** Nichols, Iowa After a brave battle with Lewy Body Disease, Harry L. Christofferson, 73, of rural Nichols passed away at Lutheran Living on February 28, 2020. Harry was born September 14, 1946 to Esther (Ogren) and LeRoy Christofferson in Iowa City, Iowa. Harry Lee is survived by his best friend and wife Jo Ann (Kaeding) Christofferson, sons Andrew of Marion, IA; Jason (Shannon Kittner) of Concord, NC, and his beloved grandchildren: Brantley Dale Christofferson & Ainsley Jo Christofferson also of Marion, IA. Other survivors include brother and sister-in-laws Larry & Terry Kaeding, Gary & Karen Fisher, Marcia Donaldson and six nieces and nephews who had a special place in his heart. Harry is also survived by his uncle & aunt Carl and Wilma Ogren as well as numerous Ogren and Christofferson cousins. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and LeRoy Christofferson, parents-in-law Jim and Arlene Kaeding, maternal and paternal grandparents, as well as his childhood friend and fishing buddy, Daryl Finley. A graduate of Lone Tree High School, Harry received his B.A. and M.A. in Counseling from Northeast Missouri State University. He served in the 1st Battalion, 410th Infantry of the United States Army Reserves from March, 1966 through February, 1972 gaining the rank of 1st Sergeant E6. Harry was a long time member of the Muscatine County Fair Board and was one of the fairs biggest supporters and cheerleaders. Harry loved attending his boys’ sporting events and other activities he was their biggest supporter. Later in life he learned to love both soccer and dance in support of his grandchildren; who he cherished many moments with on the farm riding anything with four wheels, fishing and teaching them about livestock. Harry wore many hats throughout his life: son, husband, parent, grandparent, uncle, farmer, cattleman, neighbor, friend and mentor to many. He “knew no stranger” and many of those strangers became good friends who he enjoyed seeing whenever he met them again. Harry was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting & fishing along with his other loves of farming, raising Miniature Herefords (his “other” kids as he called them) and following the Hawkeyes football and basketball teams. He especially enjoyed his “Minis”; he and Jo Ann spent many hours together working with them and traveling to cattle shows. After his family one of Harry’s biggest legacies is the time he spent working with young people. As a school counselor he touched many lives; he advised and supported any young person who wanted to talk or needed help. It didn’t matter what the topic was or where the conversation took place, whenever a student or past student needed him Harry was there with no judgement or questions asked. He was always so proud of all of his students' achievements as they became successful adults. Our family would like to thank the many close friends and neighbors who have supported us over the past few years. The support came in many forms and words cannot express how much love and gratitude we have for all of you; we could not have done it without the support you offered to us. Harry touched so many lives and there are many people that are a part of this journey with us and we hope that all of you will hold onto those special moments you shared with him. Harry (in true Harry fashion) asked that there be no visitation or formal funeral. A private family inurnment will be held later this spring. Memorials will be directed to Iowa City Hospice and the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation.
