Obituary of Mert Rockwell

Mercedes "Mert" Rockwell, 86, passed Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.

A graveside service will be held 2 P.M. Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements.

Mert was born May 11, 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa the daughter of John and Sabina (Lemon) Atilano. She was a graduate of West Liberty School High School in 1951. Mert had been employed with the West Liberty Telephone Company as a telephone operator when the switchboard was in use. The majority of her working career was spent at the West Liberty State Bank where she held the position of the secretary to the bank president.  On April 28, 1964 she was united in marriage to William Rockwell in Kahoka, Missouri. Mert took pride in her flower gardens and loved fishing with Bill. She knew every kind of bird. Her favorite dessert was strawberries and ice cream. Mert was a soft spoken, kind hearted lady with a big heart, she will be missed by all that knew her.

She is survived by brother in law: Bob Elkin Sr. of California and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Bill on March 22, 2019, and four brothers: Seth, Jay, Flavio, Peter and three sisters: Lupe, Connie and Crispina.
