William "Nubs" Rockwell, 94, passed Friday March 22, 2019 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
A graveside service with military honors will be held 11 A.M. Monday, April 1, 2019 in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements.
Bill was born September 12, 1924 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Homer L. and Laura (Smith) Rockwell. He attended West Liberty School and was a WWII Navy Veteran. Bill and his brother Charlie were civilian contractors working in Greenland to build an air defense based in the 1950's. After returning to the states, they owned and operated Rockwell Trucking together for many years. Nubs went on to retire from the University of Iowa Hospitals in maintenance. Bill enjoyed carpentry and following the Hawkeyes. In 1964 he was united in marriage to Mercedes Atilano in Kahoka, Missouri. He enjoyed fishing, feeding and watching birds, woodworking and the Chicago Cubs.
He is survived by his wife Mert of 55 years as well as many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, and seven brothers: Milton, Wesley, Willard, Harry, Lowell, Charlie, Robert and an infant brother.
