Marietta Smith, 84, died Friday, March 1, 2013 at her home in West Liberty.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at Cedar Valley United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established.
Marietta was born October 23, 1928 to Hubert and Lenora Gauger Hepker. She graduated from West Liberty High School in 1946. She began teaching in the fall of 1946 at North Country Star country school. She went on to teach kindergarten in Nichols and in the Wilton School District retiring after 17 years. On January 26, 1947, she married her high school sweetheart Kenneth Smith. They just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. They have resided in West Liberty their entire lives. Together they have 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Marietta was an active member of the Cedar Valley United Methodist Church. She loved teaching and also enjoyed baking, quilting, sewing, cake decorating for weddings and special occasions, making porcelain dolls and numerous other craft projects. Most of all she loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Elaine (Roger) Ford of Muscatine, Karla Grady of West Liberty, Kenlyn (LaMar) Miller of Muscatine, Michael Smith of Muscatine and Brenda (Barry) Berg of Cedar Rapids; brothers, Dwain (Lila) Hepker, Melvin (Kathleen) Hepker and Dennis (Mary) Hepker, all of Atalissa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother (Hubert Jr.) and a grandson.
Marietta and Kenneth moved to the family farm on March 1, 1970 and she left the farm March 1, 2013.
