Bernice Kuhlmann Poock, 86, passed away at 1:05 AM on 3/16/2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M. Monday March 19, 2012 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Liberty. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 P.M. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to West Liberty Senior Center.
Bernice was born in Bremer County, Iowa, Readlyn, daughter of William & Amanda (Harms) Kuhlmann. She grew up in that area and married Lorenz E. Poock on September 24, 1942 at Readlyn. Lorenz & Bernice lived by Sumner and later in West Liberty until 1974 when they moved to Frytown. After her children were in school, Bernice worked at Misco in Wilton and then worked 15 years at National Computer Systems in Iowa City until her retirement in 1987. She moved back to West Liberty in 1997. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Liberty. She enjoyed all of her grandchildren and loved the family’s yearly “Poock” campout which is in it’s 40th year. She was active in the West Liberty Senior Center and meal site.
Bernice is survived by 8 children and 19 grandchildren: Lyle (Val) Poock, Faribault, MN., (David, Lisa); Kenneth Poock, Avoca, IA (Patrick, Bradley); Dennis (Carol) Poock, Gaylord, MN., (Terry, Ann); Dan (Jane) Poock, Frytown, (Bill, Wendy, Jill & Ben); Dale Poock, West Liberty (Grant, Adam); James (Marisue) Poock, Parnell (Brandi, Jennifer); two daughters: Betty (Steve) Elder, West Liberty (Renae, Scott, Kevin); and Julie (Bill) Kinneer (Jessica, Chelsey); 26 great-grandchildren, several step (grand and great-grandchildren, and one sister, Berneta Poock of Readlyn. Brother-in-law: Ernest Poock of Readlyn, Iowa and a sister-in-law: Heraldine Kuhlmann of Sumner, Iowa. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, parents, twin grand daughters, a sister, Verona, and brothers, Randy and Harvey.
