John W. Kofoed passed away March 6, at his home, surrounded by his family.
John Woodrow Kofoed was born in Jones County on January 17, 1930. His parents, Hans and Laura Therkildsen Kofoed, were both born and lived their childhoods in Bornholm, Denmark. After living in Jones County, the family moved to West Branch in 1942, having purchased the West Branch Creamery. John graduated from West Branch High School in 1948 and joined his father in the creamery business. John was united in marriage to Audrey Rummells on October 25, 1952 in West Branch. When the creamery was sold to Leon Nosbish, John entered the University of Iowa and graduated with a degree in accounting in 1956. He worked in the University Business Office until 1958 when he was elected Cashier at the First State Bank, later the West Branch State Bank. He continued with the Bank until it was sold in 1997. In retirement he became a collector of local history and memorabilia. He joined with a local committee to produce West Branch: The First 150 Years for the sesquicentennial celebration of West Branch in 2001. He also continued his interest in the economic development of West Branch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Owen in 1999, and a sister, Ruth in 2000. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Audrey. Also surviving are a son, Chris (Lisa), and daughters, Karen (Terry) Suchomel and Laurie (Dan) Dauber. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jason, Adam (Ashley Hayes), and Dylan Kofoed, Mitch Moon, Dana (Nathan Terry) and Linsie (Tyler Sotzen) Dauber and two great grandsons, Garrett Sotzen and Anakin Kofoed.
As per his wishes, after cremation there will be private burial services in the West Branch Cemetery.
