West Liberty, Iowa Jean Elizabeth Wiggins Kirby, 96, passed away on January 17, 2012 at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday January 21, 2012 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice. Jean Elizabeth Wiggins Kirby was born on December 22, 1915 on a farm NW of West Liberty, IA to Earl and Edith Tompkins Wiggins. She was the oldest of 4 girls; Virginia, Pat, and Phyllis. She attended Hazel Dell country school that was located on Highway 6 and the Downey Road west of West Liberty and then West Liberty schools graduating with the Class of 1933. She married John Kirby on June 5, 1937 in Galena, IL. She is survived by two sons, Jack (Kathy), currently living in Wichita, KS and Jim (Pat), living in Bella Vista, AR., 3 grandchildren, Jeff and Gail Kirby and , Scott Kirby, Wichita, KS and Julie & Dustin Twietmeyer of Springtown, TX and 6 great grandchildren, Connor, Reesa, Caylee, Jackey, Charley and Joey. One Sister: Phyllis (George) Porter living in Melbourne, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband John, 2 Sisters: Virginia Hanson and Pat Heath. During her early years she worked at S & W Root Beer stand on Columbus Street (later called Earl & Elsie’s), Carr’s Lunch Carr, Millers Dept Store, did the bookkeeping for John’s gas station and Firestone and Gambles business, ran the Frigid Queen ice cream business that she and John owned from 1952-1955. She and John moved to Cedar Rapids in 1960, while there she worked for Mays Drug for 20 years as a bookkeeper. She also has belonged to various organizations while in West Liberty and Cedar Rapids; West Liberty Methodist Church, Asbury Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, Air Force Mothers Club, Chada Pautz Fellowship, 50 year member of TTT Society. Jean returned to West Liberty after 41 years in Cedar Rapids, moving into Heath Manor retirement center in 2001.
