Please share a memory of Dan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
West Liberty, Iowa Christopher Daniel (Dan) Fulwider passed away on January 6, 2009, at the home of his parents in West Liberty following a courageous battle with neuro-endocrine cancer. He was 34. Dan was born on June 9, 1974, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Robert E. and Janet E. Fulwider. He grew up in West Liberty and graduated with honors from West Liberty Community School District in 1993. Troop 141, Boy Scouts of America, invested him with the rank of Eagle Scout the same year. He attended Iowa State University graduating in 1997 with a degree in Political Science. He earned additional credit toward an advanced degree in Business from Iowa State and was continuing to pursue that goal upon his death. While a student at Iowa State he was very active in music as a member of the Cyclone Marching Band, Oratorio Choir and select men’s groups. While a resident of Ames, Dan worked for HyVee Foods as a special produce inventory control specialist. He also held an additional job with the ISU Athletic Media Relations Department doing special projects. One of his duties was to write and edit the Game Day Feature that appeared in all Cyclone programs distributed before ballgames. He especially enjoyed adding flavor to his written work and was quick witted in thoughts and predictions. Dan also served as the Freshmen Boys Basketball Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach of the Little Cyclones at Ames High School. In 1993, Dan was employed as a Government Affairs Coordinator and Membership Liaison for the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa. In this position he served as an assistant lobbyist for the Big I – a trade association representing over 700 Independent Insurance Agencies in Iowa. Other duties included membership coordination and visitation as well as professional liability insurance underwriting. Dan also served as Assistant Boys Basketball Coach of the Saydel Eagles the past three years. He was a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Coaches organization, the National Eagle Scout Association and the Iowa State Alumni Association. He had recently moved to Ankeny, Iowa, just prior to his illness and was active in the Ankeny First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his parents, Bob and Janet Fulwider, of West Liberty, three uncles: Howard (Marcella) Henderson of West Des Moines, Allan (Bonnie) Henderson of Brandon, Vermont, Rollie Henderson of Wiota, Iowa, aunts: Janet J. (JJ) Fulwider of West Liberty, Margaret Henderson of Wiota, Iowa; along with numerous cousins and extended relatives. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Harold and Elsie Henderson of Wiota and Jack and Edith Fulwider of West Branch. A very special friend, Mikia Burkett of Kansas City, also survives along with his dog Koby. The family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 8 at the West Liberty United Methodist Church at Fifth and Spencer Streets in West Liberty. A Celebration of Life will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 9, at the church. Interment will follow in the West Branch Municipal Cemetery, West Branch, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the C.
