West Liberty, Iowa Verland Wayne Olsen, 90, passed away at his home on September 29, 2011. Funeral services will be 10:00AM on Monday, October 3, 2011 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. Visitation will be 2:00-5:00PM on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the West Liberty Christian Fellowship. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. Verland is survived by his wife Mary, daughters Carol (Jerry) Peak, Littleton, Colorado, Patricia (Michael) Tharp and Susan (William) McMahon, West Liberty, and one son David (Linda) Olsen of Palo, Iowa; nephew Kenneth (Linda) Minor, West Liberty; grandchildren Andy (Sherri) Olsen, Marion, Iowa, John (Brandy) Olsen, Chicago, Illinois, Jason (Caitlin) Olsen, Satellite Beach, Florida, Lara (Juan) Lozano, William (Marciana) Tharp, Melanie (Brian) Womachka, West Liberty, Thomas (Angela) Tharp stationed at Ft. Riley, Manhattan, Kansas, Christopher (Angela) McMahon, West Liberty, Tim (Darcie) Dewar, Atalissa, Iowa, Scott (Heather) Dewar, Highlands Ranch, Colorado; twenty-two great grandchildren,two great-great grandchildren and Robert Dewar, like a son. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Geneva (Minor) Lloyd. Verland was born February 3, 1921 near Winston, Missouri, the son of Earl and Zella Olsen. He graduated from Winston High School, Winston, Missouri, Class of 1939, where he played basketball as a forward and baseball as catcher. Verland served in WWII as a Navy Signalman First-Class on USS Griffin, a submarine tender in the South Pacific. On February 17, 1944 Verland and Mary Alice McMahill were married in Troy, Kansas. Verland and Mary began farming near Cameron, Missouri and moved a farm 5 miles north of West Liberty in 1952, later moving to two other farms in the area. In 1968 they purchased the West Liberty Gambles Store, retiring in 1988. Verland was a groundskeeper for Cline’s trailer court from 1988 until 2007. Verland was a volunteer fireman and EMT in the West Liberty Fire Department and the Ambulance Service over 30 years, and a member of American Legion, Lion’s Club and West Liberty Christian Fellowship Church. Memorials may be given to the West Liberty Fire Department or West Liberty Ambulance Service.
