LOGAN STEEN, 78, West Liberty Logan W. Steen died Friday, April 8, 2011 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty. Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. The Funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in West Liberty with Pastor DeLane Wright officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. The family respectfully requests that donations be made to the West Liberty Fire and Ambulance Department in lieu of flowers. Logan W. Steen was born April 27, 1932 near West Liberty, Iowa. He was the youngest of five children of George and Mary Steen of West Liberty, Iowa. He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He was a Korean War Veteran and achieved the rank of sergeant. He married Marlene Meyer of Muscatine, Iowa on December 20, 1953. They were very happily married for over 52 years and resided on a farm east of West Liberty. They had one son Wayne born on August 26, 1958. Logan was a successful farmer for over 50 years in the West Liberty area. In 1965 he was second in the State of Iowa Outstanding Young Farmer Contest. He served as a director of his family’s corporation Geo. Steen & Sons, Inc. for over 50 years. He was also active in Associated Pfister Growers, Inc. a seed corn company for many years. Logan was very active in the community. He was the President of the West Liberty Jaycees. In 1965 he was a Vice President and Director of the State of Iowa Jaycees. He was also active in Rotary for many years. One of his proudest accomplishments was his helping to organize the West Liberty Ambulance Department. He served 25 years as the Secretary-Treasurer of the West Liberty Rural Fire and Ambulance District. Logan was also active in politics. He served from 1977 to 2002 as a Goshen Township Trustee. He was a member of the Muscatine County Republican Central Committee for twenty years. He was a very passionate Iowa Hawkeye fan. He attended Iowa football and basketball games for over 60 years. He was a member of the Presidents Club of the University of Iowa Athletic Club for 25 years. In later years, he enjoyed travelling with his wife and son. He especially loved Maui. He was also a member of the West Liberty Maid-Rite Coffee Club that later moved to the West Liberty Community Center. He enjoyed discussing the “true” stories of the community and solving the world’s problems in the morning coffee club. He is survived by his son Wayne Steen of West Liberty, his brother Jay Steen of West Liberty, and his sister Pauline Waters of West Branch. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Mary Steen of West Liberty; his brother Fred Steen of West Liberty and his sister Ethel Bein of Davenport; and his wife Marlene Steen of West Liberty.
