West Branch, Iowa Tom Moore III, 99, died Monday, March 14 at the Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, West Branch. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, March 16 at 9:30 AM at St. Bernadette’s Church, West Branch. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 15, 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Branch. Burial with military honors provided by the American Legion Chauncey Butler Post 514 will follow at St. Bridget’s Cemetery, Nolan Settlement. A coffee will be held at St. Bernadette’s Church Hall following the burial. Tom Moore was born August 5, 1911, rural West Branch, the son of the late Paul P. and Mayme Fisher Moore. He attended Rose Hill School, Honey Grove School, graduated from West Branch High School in 1929 and was captain of the football team. He farmed in partnership with his father until 1942. Mr. Moore joined General George Patton’s 1st Battalion, 41st Armored Infantry beginning June 22, 1942 and was honorably discharged October 31, 1945. He was a Technical Sergeant, Heavy Weapons, Combat Infantryman, and served as forward observation ahead of the front. His many decorations included the Purple Heart, Silver and Bronze Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and five Overseas Service Bars. On November 20, 1945, he married Regina Margaret Pfeiffer of Red Oak, Iowa, and they farmed and owned the Rose Hill Farm beginning in 1945. He was a graduate of the Reisch American School of Auctioneering, Mason City, and served as an auctioneer in the West Branch area for many years. Mr. Moore was a livestock buyer and was owner and operator of Morse Hog Buying and Feed. He helped found the Morse Community Club and served as president and board member for many years. He lectured at the University of Iowa on farming issues and authored a memoir “Once Upon a Time: A Story of the Great Depression.” He was a Life Member of the Disabled Veterans of America, of St. Bridget’s, and more recently, St. Bernadette’s Church. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his sons Kenneth P. and John Edward; his brothers Swayne and Keith; and his sister Dr. Pauline Moore. He is survived by his daughters Sharon of Boone and Martha (Steve) of Des Moines; grandsons Stephen Davis of San Francisco; Tim Moore (Candice) of North Liberty; Matthew Moore (Megan), and great-granddaughter Victoria Moore of West Branch. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of St. Bridget’s, Nolan Settlement, in care of Mary Ellen Wall, 5339 Morse Road NE, Iowa City, IA 52240.
