Stanley Royce Elder, 85, died Thursday January 20, 2011 at his home from complications due to Parkinson’s Disease.
Stanley was born on the family farm West of West Liberty August 29, 1925, the son of Frank and Edna Green Elder. He attended Hazel Dell country school and graduated from West Liberty High School, then served with the 8th Air Force during WWII. On October 13, 1946 he was united in marriage to Betty M. DeForest in West Liberty.
After farming he completed his career with Growmark, Inc. retiring in 1987. Stanley took an active roll in his churches, currently a member of Coralville United Methodist Church. He found great joy in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His hobbies included genealogy, clocks and puzzles, he also loved black licorice and pecan pie.
Stanley is survived by his wife Betty Elder of West Liberty, 4 children: Roberta McKee of Saginaw, Texas; Steve (Betty) Elder of West Liberty; Larry (Velia) Elder of Edinburg, Virginia and Ann Olesen of North Liberty. Grandchildren: Lisa, John, David, Adam, Renae, Scott, Kevin, Matthew, Simon, Emily and 9 great grandchildren. A sister, Vivian Bethell of Dallas, Oregon also survives. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Howard and Franklin and a sister, Gladys Phelps.
A celebration of Stanley’s life will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday January 24, 2011 at the West Liberty United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 P.M. at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial donations be made to Iowa City Hospice, the National Parkinson’s Foundation, Inc. or Coralville United Methodist Church.
