Robert W. Albrecht, 85, died Tuesday May 13, 2008 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Robert Walter Albrecht was born April 17, 1923 in Muscatine the son of Clyde and Alice Piening Albrecht. His family later moved to Iowa City and he was a graduate of Iowa City High School. He was a WWII veteran serving in the United States Marine Corp from 1943 until 1945. He engaged in three major battles: Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. Upon his discharge he joined the Marine Reserves and later the Army reserves for more than 20 years. In 1946 he earned his pilots license along with his two brothers under the G.I. Bill.
On July 19, 1946 he was united in marriage to the former Betty Lou Mackey. Bob retired as a manager of the plastic tubes division of Thatcher Plastic Packaging in Muscatine in 1985.
He was a past member of the First Church United in West Liberty, West Liberty Country Club, Mansell Phillips American Legion Post #509, N.R.A., Coast Guard Auxiliary, West Liberty Gun Club, a Charter member of the National WWII Monument in Washington, DC and a licensed snowmobile instructor.
He enjoyed woodworking, boating, snowmobiling, photography, hunting and shooting. He especially enjoyed spending time with his four grandsons and was very active in their lives. He particularly treasured his great grandchildren and could be found photographing them every chance he could get.
He is survived by two daughters: Christine (Mike) Fridley of Muscatine and Kathy (Phil) Gingerich of West Liberty. 4 Grandsons: Scott (Nicole) Fridley of Mechanicsville, Troy (Jennifer) Fridley of Muscatine, Jason (Amy) Gingerich of West Liberty and Justin (Josie) Gingerich of West Liberty. 10 great grandchildren: Vada and Jett Fridley, Reid Fridley, Mason and Logan Holmes, Ely, Sam and Mia Gingerich, Gracie and Gage Gingerich. One brother: Ken (Dorothy) Albrecht of Iowa City. Two sisters: Margaret Kinsey of Iowa City and Thelma Bowlby of Bradenton, Florida. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty in 1995, one sister Evelyn Farnsworth and two brothers Arthur Albrecht and Clyde Albrecht.
