Dorothy T. Garvin, 93, of Atalissa died Thursday March 27, 2008 at the home of her daughter in Mountain Grove, Missouri.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday April 2, 2008 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atalissa with Rev. Lynn Thiede officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 P.M. at Zion Lutheran Church, Atalissa. Burial will be in the Overman Cemetery, Atalissa. Memorial donations may be made to Camp Sunnyside.
Dorothy was born June 13, 1914 near West Liberty the daughter of Wilfred and Mae Collison Oostendorp. She was a graduate of Wilton High School. On June 20, 1931 she was united in marriage to Edward Garvin in Galena, Illinois. The couple farmed near Atalissa until 1955 when they moved to Atalissa.
She had been employed with the University of Iowa and later Owens Brush Company in Iowa City for 17 years. Following her retirement she spent many years volunteering at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City. She traveled extensively visiting every state in the union except Rhode Island, including a Caribbean cruise. Her last trip was a month in Australia with her daughter bonnie in 1999.
She was a member of Atalissa Presbyterian Church. She attended Zion Lutheran Church in Atalissa where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years.
Survivors include two daughters: Lorraine (Vern) Winmill of Mountain Grove, Missouri and Bonnie (Paul McClune) Nolan of Gibson, Iowa. One son: Gene (Nancy) Garvin of Muscatine. 10 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. One brother LeMoyne Oostendorp of Webster, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edward, one son Richard, 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, one brother and one sister.
