James Maurice Nevins, 91, died Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at the West Liberty United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established.
Jim was born on July 6, 1922 in Strather, Missouri, the son of Paul Samuel and Cara Dusendschon Nevins. He was a graduate of West Branch High School in 1942. He was united in marriage to Betty Marie Ament on November 16, 1952 in West Liberty. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years during World War II. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves for two years as well as the U.S. Naval Reserves for 32 years retiring as a CWO-4 in 1982. He worked in the engineering department of Eastern Iowa Light and Power in Wilton for 30 years.
Jim was a member and past president of the Rotary Club of West Liberty; the American Legion Post 509; the West Liberty chapter of R.S.V.P.; he volunteered at the Simpson Memorial Home; and was a former member of the West Liberty Volunteer Fire Department. Jim was very active in the West Liberty United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board and Trustees Committee and he was a 20 year member of the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Jim is survived by a sister-in-law Darlene (Dr. Gene) Shay of Muscatine and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty and a brother Gerald.
