West Liberty, Iowa Marilyn Conrey, 77, of West Liberty passed away March 21st, 2017 at Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty after a 3 year courageous battle with ovarian cancer. A memorial service will be held 11 A.M. Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Community Center in West Liberty. Online condolences can be sent to Marilyn’s family at hendersonbakerfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Iowa City Hospice, Simpson Memorial Home or Muscatine Humane Society. Marilyn Yvonne Shafer was born Feb 3, 1940 in Newton, Iowa to Gerald E and Arlene Shafer. Marilyn graduated from Newton High School in 1958, where she met her husband James Conrey. They married Feb 4th, 1958 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After several years of relocating for employment in both Iowa and Illinois, they settled in West Liberty in 1968. Jim and Marilyn owned and operated the grocery store, Jim’s Foodland/ SuperValu, serving the community for 24 years. After the store was sold, Marilyn started her new adventure working for Heath Manor Independent Living as a full time cook for the residents. She retired February 2017 after 25 years of service. Marilyn enjoyed watching tv, spending time with her family, baking and decorating cakes, and listening to country and Elvis music. She also enjoyed her time bowling in West Liberty women’s league for many years and was a lifelong Cubs fan. She also enjoyed her time serving as a girl scout leader while her daughter was in scouting. She was especially fond of animals, which she cared and loved the many shelter animals over the years to give them a second chance at life. She was a devoted care giver and loving soul, helping all those in need. She was a loyal and devoted worker to Simpson Home, caring for many of her “children”. Marilyn is survived by her mother, Arlene Crocker, 95 of Newton IA, husband of 59 years, Jim Conrey and daughter Pam Wever of West Liberty, Son James (Annette) Conrey of Huntley, IL, Grandsons Devin Wever of Ely IA, Jacob (Autumn) Burroughs of West Liberty, Alex Conrey of Crystal Lake, IL and two great- grandchildren Ashton and JayLyn Burroughs of West Liberty. She was preceded in death by her dad Bernard Crocker, biological father, Gerald Shafer, grandmother and grandfather Earl and Carmen Schrull and Earl Nelson all of Newton. The family would like to thank Dr. Miller, Dr. Bender and U of I Hospital and Staff, along with the staff at Simpson Memorial Home providing care for Marilyn during her battle with cancer.
