Life Legacy West Branch, Iowa Richard L. Rex, 80, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Tipton. Funeral service will be held 10 A.M. Thursday, December 22, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in West Branch. Visitation will be 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch. Burial will be in the West Branch Cemetery. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com. A memorial fund has been established. Richard was born April 3, 1936 in Ames, Iowa the son of Charles Russell and Sara Arlene (Millett) Rex. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1954. He then attended the University of Iowa. He moved to West Branch in 1955 to help his family run the bowling alley, where he met his future wife. On October 20, 1957 he was united in marriage to Audrey Foster in West Branch. He was later employed with his brother-in-law at Foster Maytag. He then worked for United Model, and in 1980 opened Rex Hardware that he operated until 1988. He later joined the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library where he worked as supervisor of security retiring in 2014 after 28 years. He served 16 years on the West Branch School board where he served as president. He also served as Mayor of West Branch for 12 years. Dick and Audrey enjoyed many years traveling to his parent's resort, White Hill Haven in Bemidji, Minnesota, and later to their trailer at Paradise Valley in NE Iowa. He enjoyed following the Iowa Women’s Basketball team of which they have been season ticket holders for 20 years. He also enjoyed fishing, was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan, and following his grandchildren and great grandchildren in all their activities. He was a member of the West Branch United Methodist Church and a former Kiwanis member. He is survived by wife Audrey of West Branch. Four children: Tim (Madonna) Rex of West Branch, Tammy Rex McGrew of Rockford, Illinois, Terry (Kris) Rex of Oelwein, and Tracy (Chuck) Wolfe of North Liberty, 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. One sister: Jan (Ken) Mather of West Branch, two sisters in law: Doris Hagen of San Antonio, Texas and Mary J. (Buck) Turnbull of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter Shelby.
