Viola E. Dotson, 96, passed away Monday, August 1, 2016 at her home.
Funeral services will be held 10 A.M. Friday, August 5, 2016 at the Rochester United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. Viola Erma Buckman was born June 24, 1920, on a farm near Wilton, Iowa to Charles Arthur Buckman and Erma Eva Carter Buckman. She moved with her parents to Conesville when she was four. She had 10 siblings, six sisters and four brothers. She attended school in Conesville and graduated in 1938. After she graduated she worked several jobs, such as peeling tomatoes and detasseling corn and sorting seed corn for Steen’s. She also cleaned houses and did child care.
She was united in marriage to Glenn Dotson on January 6, 1945 in Iowa City. She no longer worked outside the home and over the next nine years, taking care of three girls and a large house and garden was a full time job. She then went to work for Mrs. Peasley at the Country Tiara Restaurant where she worked as a cook until May 1973, she then went to work at Louis Rich retiring in 1982.
Viola was a member of the Rochester United Methodist Church for 53 years. She was a member of the Rochester UMW for 51 years. She was a member of the West Liberty American Legion Auxiliary for 69 years. She was also a member of the Cedar County Historical Society.
Viola is survived by daughters Katha (Dennis) Carter of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Shari Ellis (Larry Langenberg) of Iowa City and Debra DeVore of Atalissa. Sister Norma (Ralph) Baughman of Iowa City, Brother Edwin (Kay) Buckman of Joliet, Illinois and Sister Carole Kacena of Iowa City. Grandchildren Kara (Steve) Thomsen, Holly (Matthew) Mathias, Cody (Joni McBride) DeVore, Maddie DeVore, Alex (Missy) Ellis, Kerri (Andy) Fischels. Great grandchildren Maggie Mathias, Ayden Mathias, Elliot Ellis and Charlie Fischels. Viola was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sisters Ruth Solomon, Dorthory McLain, Ethel Houghton, Maxine Lee, her brothers Lysle Buckman, Donald Buckman and Charles Buckman and her son in law Michael DeVore.
