Donald T. Keith, 87, died Tuesday December 15, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Friday December 18, 2009 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until service time on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty.
Don was born January 6, 1922 in Calamus, Iowa, the son of John and Elsie Paysen Keith. He graduated from Calamus High School. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Wilson on June 12, 1943 in Augusta, Georgia.
Don enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 after graduating from high school. He graduated from Aviation Cadets as a pilot in 1943 and was assigned to the 12th Bomb Group in India, where he flew 82 combat and 27 operational missions against the Japanese forces. He later served in the Korean Conflict and was involved in more than 100 missions as a pilot of supply and air evacuation aircraft. Upon his retirement in 1970, Don was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for over 30 years of meritorious service. Donald and Evelyn moved to West Liberty after his retirement.
Don was a member of the Mansell Phillips American Legion Post 509 in West Liberty and a former member of the West Liberty Country Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his son Jack Keith of West Liberty, grandson Shane Keith of Sacramento, CA, brother Derwood (Arlene) Keith of West Liberty, and sister-in-law Ernestine Keith of West Liberty. He is also survived by his dog Pancho.
He is preceded in death by his parents John and Elsie Keith, wife Evelyn Keith, brother Vernon Keith and granddaughter Sherry Rene.
