Dr. N.W. “Doc” Blackman, 96, died Monday October 20, 2014 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
A memorial service will be held 2 P.M. Monday October 27, 2014 at First Church United in West Liberty. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Camp Courageous. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com. Family burial with military rites will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty.
Doc Blackman was born January 26, 1918 in Wheatland, Iowa the son of Arthur Blackman and Lela Blackman Kahl. He attended school in the Bettendorf and Davenport school systems. Prior to World War II he was employed briefly at the International Harvester plant in East Moline. He entered the US Army in February 1941 and served as a medic with the 34th Division 185th field artillery in Northern Ireland, North Africa and Italy.
On March 14, 1942 he was united in marriage to Gladys Klindt in Trenton, New Jersey. After returning from service he attended St. Ambrose College and the University of Iowa. He received his doctor of dental surgery degree in 1951 from the U of I Dental College. He practiced dentistry in West Liberty for 30 years, retiring in 1981.
Dr. Blackman was a life member of the American Dental Association and the Iowa Dental Association. He had served as a councilman for the City of West Liberty for 14 years, a charter member of the West Liberty Country Club, Mansell Phillips American Legion Post 509 and West Liberty Lion’s Club. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge, Elks, a life member of the Masonic Lodge and Consistory Scottish Rite and Kaaba Shrine. He had also served on the board of directors for the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty and Lutheran Home in Muscatine.
He is survived by two children: Karen (Ronald) Wedekind of Leland, North Carolina, and Gary (Zeena Janowsky) Blackman of Santa Rosa, California. Grandchildren: Jason Wedekind of Seattle, Washington, Susan (Russell) White of Charleston, South Carolina, Graham (Heidi) Blackman Nosara, Costa Rica/ Central America and Emily Blackman of San Francisco, California. He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys, father Arthur Blackman and mother Lela Kahl, brother Morris Blackman and grandson Eric Blackman.
Doc enjoyed his many hobbies; including golf, hunting, fishing and bridge. He thoroughly enjoyed his service to his beloved town of West Liberty and caring for his many patients in his busy dental practice.
