Life Legacy West Liberty, Iowa Jack Clair Smithers, 83, died Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Windmill Manor in Coralville. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 2, 2014 from 3 to 5 P.M. at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty where a prayer service will be held at 5 P.M. Burial will be 11 A.M. on Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Preston Cemetery, Preston, Iowa. Jack was born July 27, 1931 in Dunlap, Iowa the son of Sylvester and Velma Terrell Smithers. He was active in the US Marine Corp, Private First Class serving in the Korean War. On March 15, 1974 he was united in marriage to Joan Steines in Clinton, Iowa. He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad after a long career. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. He also enjoyed fishing and following horse races. He is survived by his wife: Joan Smithers, Coralville, IA; Step-Children: Monica (Larry) Shields, West Liberty, IA; Floyd (Renee) Steines, Clinton, IA; Agnes (Terry) Meeker, Higginsville, MO; James (Allyson) Steines, San Juan Capistrano, CA; special step-granddaughter Rachel (Oscar) Trinidad, Iowa City, IA. Step-Grandchildren: Mark Shields, Brian (Jamie) Shields, Ryan Steines, Kevin (Heather) Steines, Teresa (Kyle) Keller, Ashley (Daniel) Brown, Coleman Steines, Claire Steines. Step-Great Grandchildren: Eleanor Steines, Harrison Shields, Kayden Keller. He was preceded in death by Step-Daughter Angela Sager, parents, siblings and brothers-in-law: Orville Bormann and Alfred Tebbe, Jr. A special thank you to the staff at Windmill Manor for taking such good care of Jack and keeping his coffee cup full.
