Obituary of Mildred E. Mather
Mildred E. Mather, 101, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at the Springdale United Methodist Church, Springdale. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Springdale Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Springdale United Methodist Church, West Branch Fire Department or West Liberty Ambulance.
Mildred was born July 25, 1922 in Washington, Iowa the daughter of Hollis and Delpha (Cummings) Whiting. She was a graduate of Crawfordsville High School in 1940 and later attended Business School in Burlington. She served in the US WAC (Women’s Army Corp) during WWII. She met her future husband Stewart at the roller skating rink in Iowa City and they were married on August 6, 1955 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa sharing 50 years together until his death in 2005.
Mildred had worked as an archivist for the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library for 29 years retiring in 1992.
Mildred was a member of Springdale United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, Eastern Star, Chauncey Butler American Legion Post in West Branch, Springdale Self Culture Club and has been listed in Who’s Who in American for many years. Mildred was the first to have a microwave in Cedar County and made many crochet scrubbers.
She is survived by her daughter Julie Marie Mather of West Branch, one brother Andrew Whiting of Fort Worth, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Stewart, son Tom Stewart Mather, eight siblings: Robert Whiting, John Whiting, Martha Darby, Ernest Whiting, Charles Whiting, Arthur Whiting and Leona Rath.
