I will never forget my time working with Butch for the summer sports camps at the University of Iowa. Butch always had an infectious smile and personality that made every day better than the last. Our times together never felt like work. We talked a lot about our athletic experiences, and he always had the best and most insightful stories of his time as a coach. As a coach myself now, many of Butch’s lessons have shaped the way I teach my young athletes.
He always told me that he would be a coach for life, and he did just that. Butch always found a way to make the people around him better at whatever they were doing. Although he will be coaching and cheering from heaven, his ability to improve the lives of the people he cared about will always continue. Rest in peace, Coach.

Dear Jenny and family;
Vicki and I were so sorry to hear of Butch's passing. He brought so much pride and joy to all of us who lived and worked in West Branch. Most important was his time and commitment to so many young men at a critical moment in their lives. He will be loved and remembered for decades to come. He was the epitome of the meaning of mentor, coach, and role model.
His love you you, Jenny, and the family was always evident in his smile and good cheer when he visited us all at the library. My Gad bless you all in this time of grief. We will keep you in our prayers.

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I learned of the passing of Coach Butch Pedersen. Butch was my head south shrine coach in 2019. All during our nine days in camp Butch would come to me and ask “ what can I do to make our time with the players special”. What can I say to them to leave a lasting memory of our game”. I am sure that each of the 46 players at the end of our game felt that Coach Butch Paterson was a true Gentleman and a Fantastic Coach.

If there ever was a life worth celebrating, it was Butch’s His and the countless other lives, on and off the football field, that he influenced and inspired. A true “life coach” who led by example, showing how to be a man, husband, father, grandfather, friend, neighbor and citizen…the numbers he racked up are impressive enough, but it is his character, decency, and concern for others that make him much more than a local legend. Jenny, how blessed you were to share live with such a partner. Please accept my condolences, and know that you and your family are in our prayers. Richard Norton Smith

My condolences and sympathy go out to your family during the difficult time for your loss. Coach touched so many hearts thru the years that he coached football and taught in school. I will always remember being welcomed and accepted as a bear, once a bear always a bear. Thank you coach for the many great years of football that you gave us. You will be truly missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. I can remember back in junior high watching Butch and his other legendary teammates play sports. Then watched again as he coached my brothers and nephews. Even though I have been gone from West Branch for 50 years, Butch never failed to extend a greeting whenever our paths crossed over the years.

During my broadcast days at WMT-AM 600, I always looked forward to scheduling West Branch as one of our area games of the week, whether it be in the Little Rose Bowl or a drive all the way to Pekin. Even better were conversations prior to the game, just getting to know him as a football philosopher, coach, and person (and exchanging a broadcast tape for a West Branch cap). My condolences go out to the Pedersen family and the West Branch community.

Dear Jenny and family: We have indeed lost a coaching legend but more importantly, a loving husband, father, grandfather and so much more. For those reasons and many more, cousin "Papa Bear" Butch will live forever in our memories. May his life be an inspiration for others to live as he did, with care, generosity, and a gritty will to make things better!

To officials, there was only one Butch.
Once the ball was kicked or tossed or pitched it was total competition. Did not matter if it was a playoff game or 7th grade basketball, he coached intensely.
When the game ended, he was always a pleasure the next time our paths crossed.
He is gone too soon. I would have loved another chance to hear “Teddy” called from the bench with “insights” about what was really happening during the game.
Rest in peace, Coach.

I had the privilege of working at West Branch Middle School for five years, 1989-1994, I knew Butch as both a teacher and a coach. He always had a kind word and encouragement for a rookie principal. Whenever I saw him after my time as a Bear, he was always gracious (even during lightning delays at Wapello). Rest in peace Coach.

Jenny and Family: Butch was one-of-a-kind. I was a football manager for 4 years and specifically changed my schedule around in HS so he would be my PE teacher. He was one of my favorite people. I hope you are able to read the posts about Butch, not only here, but on his Facebook page, and in the WB Times etc. I hope you know how many people he touched and how much of an impact he had on the lives of thousands of people. Butch was a legend, and legends never die.

A coach’s success can be measured with wins and losses. And Butch’s success is legendary. What transcends his success was his ability to reach beyond victories on the field, the court, or the diamond . . . to build better people . . . better communities.
Thank you, Coach, and Godspeed -

Butch was a special man to me, i started working with seniors to be football manager summer going into my freshman year. He was funny, loving, and always had something off the wall to say. He taught me to love football from the sidelines…he showed me that no matter what happened win or lose family was important. He was HUGE on tradition and always had his superstition so dont let him find out u werent wearing the same socks u had worn when we won the week before because u bet hed make you go get em. He was a great man i will forever cherrish the memories and moments we had on the field, in the class room, and even in his office in between two a days playing playstation.
I love you butch thank you for my love of football!
