Ed's dad, my grandfather O. E. Eichelberger, went by Earl, the middle name we both shared. Ed always called him Earl. O. E. always smoked a pipe, or at least he lit it. Then it would go out, and he'd light it again. One time at a family gathering, as he was relighting his pipe, Ed said, "Earl, that damned thing will kill you." O. E. who was already past 90 replied, "Well it sure has taken it a long time." Ed was always the life of any party or other gathering.
