Obituary of Merle W. Morehead

Merle W. Morehead, 101, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.

No services are planned. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. 

Memorials may be made to West Liberty United Methodist Church, Iowa City Hospice or West Liberty & Rural Township Fire & EMS Association.

Merle was born August 17, 1920 the son of Roy and Alice (Roth) Morehead at Burchard, Nebraska. He graduated from Lewiston, Nebraska High School in 1937. He served several years in the Civilian Construction Corp and in July 1942 was drafted spending 3 ½ years in the Army Air Force as a flight engineer serving in the European Theater. On May 13, 1948 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Andersen in Brock, Nebraska.

The family moved to West Liberty in July 1961 and he was employed with Mapco Pipeline for 20 years, later working at the Simpson Home for 19 years.

Merle was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist Church and Mansell Phillips American Legion Post #509, West Liberty. He enjoyed fishing and attending auctions.

Survivors include his wife Evelyn of West Liberty, one daughter Mary Hildebrand of West Liberty, two grandsons Michael (Jennifer) Hildebrand of Brooklyn, Iowa and Mark (Jana) Hildebrand of Winter Garden, Florida, seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, 2 brothers, and a son in law Neil Hildebrand.
