Obituary of Max D. Chown

Max D. Chown entered into eternal rest Sunday, September 17, 2017.

Services for Max D. Chown, 69, of Joplin Trailer Park, Mt. Ida, Arkansas will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 30th at the West Liberty Community Center with burial in the Nichols Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty Friday, September 29th, 3:00-8:00 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to Our Promise Cancer Resources at Genesis Cancer Center, 1333 Harmony Park Circle, Hot Springs, AR 71913.

Max passed away peacefully September 17th, surrounded by loved ones, ending a courageous 7 year battle with lung cancer.  Through it all he continued to work, entertain and care for others. 

Max was born February 8, 1948 to Robert and Doris (Poole) Chown.  In 1968 he married Kathy Harmon in West Liberty, IA.  A daughter, Tami and son, Todd were born from this union.  They later divorced.  In 1995 he married Jane Landon in Joplin Trailer Park and became stepfather to Christopher.

Max was the operator and owner of Chown Appliance for over 30 years, carrying on the business his father started in 1930.  In 1989 he purchased Joplin Trailer Park in Mt. Ida, Arkansas in partnership with his sister, Kay Cline.  The two of them managed the business from Iowa for several years.  Max retired in 2010 and moved to Arkansas, which was more of a transition to his next endeavor as operator and owner of Joplin Trailer Park and fisherman of beautiful Lake Ouachita.

Max served his country as a member of the Army Reserves.  He was a member of the Nichols volunteer fire department and a deacon of the Nichols Christian Church.  Max held many roles in his time on earth: son, brother, dad, husband, grandpa, dog lover, boss, partner, businessman, landlord, mentor, protector, entertainer, hunter, fisherman, teacher, electrician, plumber, salesman, mechanic, groundskeeper, grill master and last but not least, friend.  He was loved by and will be sorely missed by many.

Survivors include his wife Jane Chown of Mt. Ida; daughter Tami (Jesse) Streinz of West Branch; son Todd (Nancy) Chown of West Liberty; step-son Christopher (Diana) Holway of North Liberty; granddaughter Morgan Dragovich; grandsons Jack Dragovich, Cole, Gavin and Nathan Chown; sister Karen (Bill) Cline; brothers Fred (Judy) Chown, James (Bonnie) Chown, Dana (Julie) Chown, Jon Kevan (Mary) Chown.

He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Doris Chown, brother Glenn Chown and grandson Hunter Chown.
