Nichols, Iowa

Victor F. Mills, 92, passed away Sunday, July 12, 2026 at the University of Iowa Hospital Downtown Campus in Iowa City.

Victor was born August 19, 1933 at home the son of Frank and Wilma (Kirchner) Mills. He was a graduate of Nichols High School in the class of 1951 and attended Iowa Wesleyan College. He served in the US Air Force for 1 year. On September 12, 1954 he was united in marriage to Barbara Jo Hanft at the United Methodist Church in Nichols.                                    .

He was committed to Nichols, dedicating many years of service to the Nichols Fire Department, with many years as Fire Chief. He also served as a member of the Nichols City Council, always supporting the community.

Victor loved hunting, was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball fan, and had a true passion for automobiles. His love of cars led him to become involved with Motor Ioway, where he enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm for classic cars and with others who shared the same passion.

Victor also treasured the friendships he made through the Nichols coffee club, which began in the 1970’s, gathering with friends and sharing stories. Some of his happiest times were spent relaxing with family and friends at their cottage on Pike Run.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Jo, son Phillip, grandchildren:  Carrie (Scott) Swart, Mark (Jen) Mills, Lindsay Mills, Alyssa (Devan) Warnstaff and great grandchildren: Zach, Vaughn, Cadance Swart ,  Aidan Mills, Dylan Bradley Warnstaff and Winry Jo Warnstaff. . He is also survived by a brother Keith Mills and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: Frank and Wilma, infant daughter: Dawn, son: Gordon and father and mother in law: Hale and Gertrude Hanft.

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Funeral service will be held 1030 A.M. Thursday, July 16th at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Nichols Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Victor Mills Memorial Fund.
