West Branch, Iowa

Mildred “Millie” Verlo, 93, of West Branch, passed away at her home on Friday, May 8, 2026.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at the West Branch United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the West Branch Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Branch Fire Department or the American Cancer Society.

Millie was born November 13, 1932, the daughter of Clifford Arrah and Maude (Mericle) Ewing. She graduated from Thompson High School in Thompson, Iowa where she was the valedictorian and later attended Waldorf College. On March 22, 1953, she was united in marriage to Audrey Verlo in Titonka. The couple lived in North central Iowa for several years before moving to Morse, and in 1957 made their home in West Branch.

In her early years, Millie taught school. She later worked as a waitress at the East Side Café and Hoover House, Sky King all in West Branch and the Hawkeye Truck Stop in Coralville. Prior to retirement she also worked was with the Cookson Home and Tidewater Publishing.

Millie was a faithful member of the West Branch United Methodist Church where she was active in church life and activities. She enjoyed bowling and participated in leagues in Coralville and Iowa City. She also loved cooking, baking, canning, sewing, quilting and making trips to the casino with friends. Millie had a wonderful sense of humor and truly enjoyed visiting with people.

She is survived by her four children: Arlyn (Paula) Verlo, Lisette Verlo, Craig (Ellen) Verlo and Denise Verlo, all of West Branch; grandchildren Chris Verlo, Mike (Sarah) Verlo, Spencer (Angel) Verlo, Brady Verlo, Joe Fowler, Andrea Verlo and Jeff Buckner; great-grandchildren Brenton, Sidney and Grady; and one great-great-grandson, Jaxon. She is also survived by a sister, Barb Thompson of Garner, Iowa and sister-in-law LaVaune Emerson of Burnsville, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Audrey; two sons, Wesley and Eric; granddaughter, April; and two sisters, Dorothy Ruiter and Virginia Buland.
