Donald Keith “Kurly” Vrchoticky passed away Monday, November 17, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Don was born and raised on September 13, 1938, in Iowa City, the son of Donald and Catherine (Goss) Vrchoticky. Don attended and graduated from Iowa City High School.  He served in the U.S. Army Reserves and with the Johnson County Sheriff’s department reserves.

On April 14, 1979, he was united in marriage to the love of his life and his best friend, Doris Ann “Annie” Melton Eubanks on a country hillside in Iowa City.

Don had been employed with Moore Business Forms for several years before beginning a long career with the University of Iowa. He worked at the University’s electric plant and later with the University Hospitals and Clinics as a maintenance supervisor, retiring after 35 years of service.

He enjoyed traveling with Doris, antiquing, golfing, jigsaw puzzles with his wife Doris, riding his motorcycle, and visiting with both old friends and the new friends he so easily made. He never met anyone he couldn’t tell a story to or have a conversation with. He truly had the gift of gab. He loved to tell jokes so much, he had a book of jokes to remember them all.

Survivors include two children: Bob (Glenda) Eubanks of Solon and Sheila (Eric) Eubanks-Cheney of North Liberty; six grandchildren: Cameron (Sami) Eubanks, Spencer Eubanks, Justin (Megan) Waskow, Jennifer (Joe McGinn) Waskow, Pamela Eubanks (Damon) Sojka, and Bobby Eubanks-Cheney; and great-grandchildren: Taryn, Chase, and Chloe Eubanks, Kaylen Reed, Della Waskow, Maelyn McGinn, and Shay and Shy Sojka.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Doris, in June 2025.

A celebration of life memorial will be held on Saturday April 25th at Frida Kahlo’s, 101 Windflower Lane, Solon from 3:30 – 6:30.
