Phyllis Ann Langenhan, age 99, of Iowa City, passed away on September 4 at the Briarwood Health Care Center. A private service has been scheduled at a later date.
Phyllis was born October 26,1925 in Cleveland, Ohio to Clyde and Maude Smith. She began formal schooling prior to age 5, quickly advanced a grade and graduated from Rocky River High School at the age of 16. She earned her BS at MacMurray College and attained a MA at the University of Iowa.
Phyllis met her husband of 75 years, John Langenhan, while attending junior high in Rocky River. Their relationship continued and after John completed his military service, they married in 1946.
Early in life, Phyllis earned an appreciation for water activities as a lifeguard on a Lake Erie beach. She introduced her children to swimming and soon summers were consumed with Iowa City Swim Club participation. A second home at the Lake of the Ozarks led to many years of family fun. Phyllis enjoyed daily water aerobics well into her mid 90's.
Professionally, Phyllis was a high school science teacher and later a special education consultant. Following retirement, she spent many years as a volunteer at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library. She was a member of Hoover foundation and had fond memories of events and travel associated with this involvement.
Phyllis was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a member of the West Branch Methodist Church for over 50 years and was involved in many service organizations throughout her life.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Karen Rushton {Chris}, Barbara Achey {Buzz}, John Langenhan {Tina}, brother Robert Smith, eight Grandchildren and 22 Great Grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, John and parents, Clyde and Maude Smith.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude for the support from Suncrest Hospice, Briarwood Health Care Center and the Summit of Coralville.
