William “Bill” Sydney Laughlin, 76, of West Liberty, IA, passed away on August 16, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Visitation will be held on Thursday,  August 21st from 4:00–7:00 PM at First Church United, West Liberty.  Funeral service will be held at First Church United on Friday, August 22nd at 10:30am with Pastor Deb Mann officiating. Burial will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty following the service.

Bill was born on July 3, 1949, in Iowa City, IA, to James Edward and Mae Louise (Barnes) Laughlin. He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1968 and went on to work as an electrician and in maintenance for Louis Rich and Oscar Mayer, dedicating over 35 years to his career. After retirement he went to work at City Electric/3E for 10 years. Bill was an active member of the West Liberty community, serving on the West Liberty School Board for 12 years and volunteering with the West Liberty Fire Department for 30 years.

Bill was united in marriage to Patricia Joanne Bromell on July 19, 1975 in West Liberty. They celebrated 50 years of marriage last month.

Bill had a wide array of interests; attending Hawkeye sporting events, golfing, playing cards and spending quality time with family and friends. In his later years, he found great joy in attending and supporting his grandchildren's activities.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patty; their sons: James (Jeni) Laughlin and their children Lindsey and Brady, and Jeff (Shawna) Laughlin and their sons Caden, Ryan, and Jackson all of West Liberty. He is also survived by his sister in-laws: Sandy Stein and Shelly (Mark) Muhs and several nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Cindy Danielson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the West Liberty School Foundation or the West Liberty Rural Townships Fire & EMS Association.
