Santiago lll “Geno” Lechuga

West Liberty, Iowa

Santiago lll  Lechuga, or better known as “Geno”, 34, of West Liberty, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in Cedar Rapids following injuries sustained in a work accident.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 107 West 6th St., West Liberty. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 26 at the church, with burial to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home is caring for Geno and his family.

Santiago was born April 8, 1991, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Santiago Lechuga and Carmela (Ortiz) Lechuga. He graduated from West Liberty High School and went on to complete an electrician apprenticeship under the sponsorship of Ace Electric. Over the years, he worked with Paul Reveres Pizza, Ace Electric, Metro Pavers, and most recently Streb Construction Co., Inc. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

To know Geno was to know joy. He was the life of the party — the one with music playing, a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other, dancing like everyone was watching. He laughed with his whole heart and had a gift for making everyone around him feel included and loved.

Whether he was fixing something that seemed beyond repair, cracking a perfectly timed joke, or offering a hand to someone in need, Geno had a rare and beautiful ability to build community wherever he went. He treated strangers like old friends and friends like family.

More than anything, Geno loved his family. Being with them — sharing beers, telling stories, making memories — was his greatest joy. His heart was bigger than words can capture, and his spirit brought warmth, laughter, and light to every room he entered.

Geno is survived by his beloved fiancée, Joana Sanchez, their stepdaughter Anaya Larios, and their unborn daughter Miah Guadalupe Lechuga, all of Ottumwa, Iowa. He is also survived by his parents, Santiago and Carmela Lechuga of West Liberty; his brother Leonardo “Davy” (Blanca) Lechuga of West Liberty and their children Victoriah, Viannah, and David Armando Lechuga; his sister Brianna Lechuga of West Liberty, his grandfather Ramiro Ortiz and many aunts, uncles and cousins from both sides of his family that cared for him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his uncles Francisco J. Lechuga and Jesus A. Salazar; his maternal grandmother Guadalupe Becerra-Ortiz; paternal grandparents Esperanza and Santiago Lechuga; and great-uncle Armando Lechuga.

In true Geno fashion, everyone is invited to come as you are — bring a good story, a big laugh, and raise a beer (or a RedBull) in his honor.

Santiago lll “Geno” Lechuga

West Liberty, Iowa
