Obituary of John Michael Duytschaver

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

John “Mike” Michael Duytschaver, age 76, of West Liberty, Iowa, passed away suddenly on May 3, 2025.

Mike was born on July 17, 1948 in Kewanee, Illinois to John and Connie (Snider) Duytschaver. He graduated from Kewanee High School in 1966 and went on to the University of Illinois. Mike then  transferred to University of Iowa where he graduated. He dedicated 30+ years of his professional life as a respiratory therapist at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Known for his compassionate care, he made a lasting impact on both his patients and colleagues.

Mike married Sharon “Carly” Carlson on August 6, 1977, and together they built a life filled with love and meaningful connections. Above all, his greatest joy was his family. He was a proud and devoted father to his two children, Jeff and Katie, and found immense happiness in being present for every moment of their lives. That same love and pride extended to his four grandchildren, Charlie, Max, Lucy and Henry, who brought him endless joy. Whether on the sidelines coaching or in the crowd cheering them on—at sporting events, school functions, or community activities—he was their biggest supporter, always encouraging and always proud. To his grandchildren, he wasn’t just Popi—he was the best pancake maker ever, and their time together was filled with love, laughter, and cherished traditions.

Mike built a life filled with love, meaningful connections, and a lasting commitment to his community. His dedication was evident in countless ways—through his active roles with the Heritage Foundation, Lions Club, and Knights of Columbus; his compassionate work with the local Food Pantry and toys for Christmas Giving via Voluntary Action; and his service on the West Liberty School Board and the board of the AEA. A passionate supporter of youth and families, he helped start youth sports programs in West Liberty and led as a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts. He also gave his time as a volunteer ambulance driver, always ready to help in times of need. He had a deep love for the Muscatine County Fair, where he proudly served as a judge and could often be found at the ticket booth with a welcoming smile or driving a golf cart around the grounds. His legacy of giving, leadership, and love continues to inspire all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Carly; his children, Jeff (Sara) Duytschaver and their sons, Max and Henry, and Katie (Jake) Howard and their daughters, Charlie and Lucy. He is survived by his brother, Pat (Becky), Brother-in law Gary (Sheryl) Carlson, their children and families, as well as countless friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Connie and John Duytschaver,  his in-laws, Gerald and Rose Carlson and sister-in-law, Sheila Carlson.
