Life Legacy  West Liberty, Iowa Darel E. Sterner, 85, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2016 surrounded by his family at his home in West Liberty. Funeral service will be held 10 A.M. Monday, November 7, 2016 at Cedar Valley United Methodist Church, 1791 155th St., West Liberty. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 P.M. at the Church. Burial with military honors will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty. Memorials may be made to the Darel Sterner Memorial Fund. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com. Darel Elvin Sterner was born April 20, 1931 in Muscatine County, Iowa the son of George and Florence (Aye) Sterner. He was a graduate of Atalissa High School in the Class of 1950 and attended Barber School in Des Moines. He was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1954 where he was stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany. On October 30, 1954 he was united in marriage to the former Donna Fae Passmore at Cedar Valley United Methodist Church, celebrating 62 years of marriage. He was employed with Sickmon Barber Shop and purchased the business in 1956, he had worked as a barber from 1954-2015, moving the shop into his home in 1995. Darel was a member of the Cedar Valley United Methodist Church, and enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, artisan woodworking and coffee at Caseys. He was a LONG TIME Chicago Cubs fan and lived long enough to hear the Cubs had won the World Series! He is survived by his wife Donna Fae Sterner of West Liberty, two children: Darla Sterner of Muscatine and Durk (Jill) Sterner of Lone Tree, two grandchildren Holli (Brian) Crowley of Bettendorf, Dr. Nick Sterner of Schaumburg, Illinois, great grandson Brayden Crowley and future great grandchild due April 2017. One brother Ray Sterner of Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Clarence, Dean and Ronald Sterner and one sister Erma Black.
