West Branch, Iowa Verlene Ruth Herman, 95 of West Branch, died peacefully at Crestview Specialty Care on August 28th, 2016. Verlene was a lifelong resident of Cedar County and has lived in West Branch since 1930. Funeral service will be held 1 P.M. Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the West Branch Cemetery. Memorials can be made to either the Crestview courtyard fund, as Verlene enjoyed it very much during her last few years at Crestview or to the Cedar County Historical Society PO Box 254, Tipton, Iowa 52772. Verlene was born on a farm near Bennett in Island Township on Saturday, October 23, 1920 to Lloyd Walter and Eva Ruth (Terhune) Lincoln. Verlene graduated from West Branch High School in 1939. She remembered walking to school by the Hoover birthplace. She also remembered shaking President Hoover’s hand as a school child. Verlene started working at the Hoover Hotel, then went to work at East Side Café. She worked first for Mr. & Mrs. Culver, then Lee and Olive Eich when they bought it after World War II. At East Side, Verelene met a young man from Nebraska, who had come to Iowa to work in the quarry. On April 1, 1944 Verlene married Kenneth Luther Herman of Wymore, Nebraska. They were married in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Verlene was active in the United Methodist Church in West Branch, being a circle chairman and often doing programs and providing a lemon desert, she also worked many football dinners. She was a Girl Scout Leader, often meeting the cookie truck. Verlene was a member of the Cedar County Historical Society and the Cedar County Democrats. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and West Branch Bears football fan. Verlene enjoyed traveling to California, Idaho, Colorado, The Black Hills, Florida and frequent trips to Nebraska. Verlene is survived by her and Kenneth’s daughter Margaret (Peggy) Herman of Ottumwa, Iowa, her sisters Ilene Frank of Burlington, Iowa, Donna McIlrath of DeKalb, Illinois, her nieces and nephews, Carolyn Kling of Quincy, Illinois, Susan Lincoln (Keith Smith) of West Branch, Iowa, Diane Hummel (Dana) of Tiffin Iowa, Warren Frank (Barri) of Antioch, California, Debra Lasiowski (Greg) of Burlington, Illinois, Michael Lincoln (Michelle) of Bethel, Missouri, David McIlrath (Kathie) of West Branch, Iowa, along with 9 great nieces and nephew; 14 great-great nieces and nephews, 6 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Verlene is proceeded in death by her husband Kenneth, parents Lloyd & Ruth Lincoln, brothers, Lloyd & Wilbur (Abe) Lincoln and sister Lela Lincoln, her step children, Laura Lou Taylor & Kenton Dee Herman, Brother and sister in laws, Donald Frank, George McIlrath, Alice Lincoln and Esther Lincoln, her nephew and great nephew Miran and Mark Kling and grandson George Allen. Verlene’s family would like to thank Crestview Specialty Care for their love and wonderful care over the last six years. Also thank you to Iowa City Hospice for their care over the last three months.
